Job Description – Deputy Chief  

I. Scope:

This standard shall apply to the Deputy Fire Chief of the Vegreville Fire Department.

II. Position Summary:

The assistant to the Manager of the Fire Department.

III. Duties and Responsibilities:

The Deputy Chief shall:

A.   Report to the Fire Chief.

B.    In the absence of the Chief assume the chief’s duties in an acting role.

C.   Demonstrate a working knowledge of Fire Safety and Fire Prevention.

D.   Organize and prepare training activities.

E.    Command fire, rescue and hazardous materials incidents.

F.    Demonstrate leadership.

G.   Work as a member of a team to prepare pre-emergency plans.

H.   Participate in Public Fire Education.

I.       Participate in fire prevention and inspections.

J.      Demonstrate a working knowledge of fire fighter safety.

K.   Exemplify conduct and appearance at all times.

L.    Provide overall direction of operations while delegating authority for tactical operations to subordinates.

M.  Shall cause all incidents to be remedied quickly and with the least possible danger to life using proper tools, equipment and procedures.

N.   Perform other related duties.

IV. Qualifications:

A.   Experience as an officer or acting officer.

B.    Demonstrate good interpersonal skills

C.   Pass the prescribed examinations.

D.   Appointed by the Fire Chief.
