Emergency Generator Use

 

I. Scope:

 

This standard establishes guidelines for the safe and proper procedure for operating the Department’s portable generator system.  It was created to:

A.   Prevent accidents, injuries or deaths that might result from the improper or unsafe methods of operating the Department’s portable generator system.

B.    Prevent damage to the building and/or any equipment that might result from unsafe operation or misuse.

 

II. General:

 

A.   The portable generator is used to power the Emergency Services Building in case of power failure.

B.    The portable generator can also be used for scene lighting or powering up the Special Operations Trailer at an emergency incident.

C.   The generator shall only be serviced by qualified personnel and technicians.

D.   Safety precautions must be taken to avoid injury from electrical hazards.

E.    The generator can be towed to any location by use of the command unit.

 

III. Procedure:

 

The following procedures are to be done only by qualified personnel or under the direct supervision of qualified personnel:

A.   Move the unit into place at the outside northwest corner of the station and block for movement.

B.    Check the unit for fuel, oil and any leaks. (See document in Log Book)

C.   Start the unit and let it warm up in the idle position, for at least 10 minutes.

D.   Unlock the cabinet on the building, which is red in colour and remove the cord.  (Key is located in Chief’s office - #20)

E.    Insert the cord into the outlet, on the generator and ground generator to building ground.

F.    Bring generator up to rated speed.

G.   Inside the building, in the electrical room, immediately to the left there is a transfer switch.  Move the lever from the supply authority to the stand-by unit position.

H.   Monitor the use of electricity throughout the building by using only what is required to sustain the building.

I.       Check the unit every hour for fuel and leaks that could develop on the unit and correct any deficiencies. (record in Log Book all times and functions)

J.      When you are done using the generator make sure to record the hours of use in the Log Book, also record any problems with the generator and forward to the Chief so they may be corrected.

K.   Make sure the transfer switch in the building’s electrical room, is switched back to the supply authority and coil up the cord for the building.  Relock the cable box on the building.

L.    Unblock the generator and move the unit back into the hall.

M.  Make sure that the fuel is topped off and the oil is at the proper level for the next use.
