Fitness for Duty

 

I. Scope:

 

This standard shall apply to all members required to engage in emergency    operations. It was set forth to:

A.   Evaluate the medical and physical fitness and abilities of members      engaged in emergency operations.

B.    Certify that members engaged in emergency operations are medically and physically fit and able to perform their duties.

 

II. Annual Medical Evaluation:

 

A.   All members assigned to emergency operations shall be annually   certified as meeting the medical requirements determined by the department.

B.    The annual medical evaluation shall consist of:

1.     An interval medical history

2.     Height and Weight

3.     Blood Pressure

C.   The annual medical examination shall be conducted as follows:

1.     Ages 29 and under- every three years.

2.     Ages 30-39- every two years.

3.     Ages 40 and above- every year.

D.   Any member who refuses certification or is not certified as meeting the medical requirements, shall be relieved of emergency operations duty and shall be assigned to other duties by the fire chief until such time as the member can be certified by a physician to return to emergency operations.

E.    If a member is unable to return to full duty within 12 months of being relieved of duty the member shall be reevaluated and a decision made, by the Fire Chief, as to their future with the department.

 

III. Physical Fitness:

A.   Each member assigned to emergency operations shall maintain their personal physical fitness at a level that meets the annual physical performance examination.

B.    Each member shall be evaluated and certified annually as meeting the department’s minimum physical performance requirements.

C.   A firefighter/officer will be required to perform the following exercises:

a.      Cover a distance of 1 km in less than 8 minutes.

b.     Climb stairs consisting of 18 steps round trip 9 times in 3 minutes.

c.     20 push ups.

d.     Lift a weight of 40 lbs above your head and back to chest 10 times.

e.      Drag Rescue Randy 15 meters.

f.       Pick up a 65mm hose and carry it 30 meters in less than 1 minute.

The entire program must be completed within a one hour time limit. Take breaks in between sets and have your respirations, pulse, and blood pressure checked.

D.   Members who fail to meet the minimum physical requirements shall be placed in a rehabilitation program, not to exceed 4 months, to facilitate their progress in attaining the minimum level of performance required.

E.    If after 4 months a member is still unable to meet the minimum physical performance requirements they shall be assigned to other duties by the fire chief. The member shall then have 12 months to attain the required level. If they are still unable to attain the minimum required level, their future with the department shall be re-evaluated.
