Identification and Equipment Inventory

 

I. Scope:

 

This standard establishes an accountability system for the management of the material assets of the department, excluding buildings and motorized vehicles.  It was created to:

A.   Prevent the loss or theft of material assets by providing an identification system.

B.    Identify the member that a piece of equipment is assigned to.

C.   Establish an inventory system for material assets.

D.   Establish responsibilities for the acquisition and repair of equipment.

 

II. Labeling:

 

A.   All nonconsumable items shall be marked or labeled by some permanent means.  The mark or label shall identify the item as being the property of the department (i.e. “VFD”).

B.    Generally, items may be marked or labeled as follows:

1.     Cloth and other porous items shall be marked with indelible ink.

2.     Metallic items shall be marked with an electric engraver or die stamps.

C.   Communication equipment shall have labeling identifying the units’ identification number and the name of the member assigned to it.  All communication information shall be recorded in the departments’ master radio log.

D.   Fire Hose shall be engraved with an identification number assigned by the department.  These numbers shall be used for identification and record keeping when hoses are tested.

 

III. Inspection and Inventory of Tools and Equipment:

 

A.   The department shall record and maintain a master list of all equipment, tools, furniture and other material assets.

B.    The inventory shall be updated each time a new piece of equipment is acquired or an old one is discarded.

            C.   The Master Inventory list shall include the following:

                   1.  Inventory Number

                   2.  Description of the item.

                   3.  Date the item was acquired.

                   4.  Vendor name.

                   5.  Assigned location (where applicable).

All members shall ensure that this guideline is followed.
